Bandung is the provincial capital of West Java, Indonesia. It is situated in the Java Island on a highland plateau about 768 meters above the sea level. The city is surrounded by mountains and located in the middle of prehistoric lake.
The main part of Bandung lies to the south of the railway line that crosses the city from east to the west. Most of the banks, airlines, tourist offices and five-star hotels are located here, along with the alun-alun, as the main square in Indonesian cities is called. The principle thoroughfare, Jalan Asia Afrika, is in this part of town. There is also Jalan Braga, which was the up-market shopping area in colonial times and is now the center of Bandung’s nightlife. Most of the city’s budget accommodation and many of its huge shopping malls are also in this area.
On the other side of the railway are the elegant residential areas of the old Dutch suburb with their wide tree lined streets, gardens and parks. The urban area stretches north along two parallel arterial roads, Jalan Setiabudi and Jalan Juanda, to the hills of Dago. The offices of the West Java provincial government, the Bandung Institute of Technology and the zoo are located in this area.

When I was in elementary school, I had a bad experience. At that time I liked social studies. We had it two times each week, on Tuesday and Friday. On Fridays, before the lesson began, we always had a small test or quiz in our test books.
Because I liked the lesson very much, I always studied hard a few days before, even a week before the quiz. The result was that I always got good marks for the quiz. The teacher was proud of me and always praised me before the other students.
One day, because I had many things to do, I hadn’t studied before the test. I didn’t want my mark to be lower than before. So, I decided to cheat. On Thursday evening, I wrote the lesson material on a piece of paper and put it in my test book.
When I did the quiz, I could do it easily. I just looked at the lesson material and wrote it all. However my deskmate knew this and told the teacher.
I was very embarrassed and regretted very much for what I had done. Although the teacher didn’t get angry with me, I knew that all the effort I had done before was useless. You know why? Because the teacher now suspected that I got good marks because I cheated.

Last Friday, I went to school with a bald head. My friends greeted me with looks of awe, laughter and plenty of cheeky comments that could have burnt my ears off for shame.
It all happened when I noticed that my hear had grown too long. It was touching my collar. Mr. Teoh would not like that, I thought. Mr. Teoh was our school’s discipline master. My father was overseas. He usually cuts our hair for us. Thinking, I would get a cut at the barber, I got ready to go. But my sister stopped me saying, “Why waste so much money when I can do it for you free of charge?” I was not sure that she could do it but I thought it would save me the walk. I was feeling lazy that afternoon.
So, she started snipping my hair with a pair of scissors. Halfway through, I came out of my lull and panicked. I saw in the mirror that things were not going very right. But my sister insisted she had not finished yet and told me to be patient. At the end of it when I saw myself in the mirror, the effect was ‘hair raising’. My beautiful hair reduced to nothing more than a haphazard havoc! I had no choice but to go to barber the time.
When the barber saw me he laughed. And then he told me that he should cut all of it, leaving me bald.
